John Adams and Philip Glass
Feb. 8th, 2007 09:19 pmMrs Henry the Cow & I went to see the Scottish Chamber Orchestra at the weekend, playing a mixture of pieces by Philip Glass and John Adams. We had seats in the side gallery, which meant that we only saw 2/3 of the orchestra, but never mind. The music was good. I especially liked Adams's Chamber Symphony, which showed more variety and depth than the Glass pieces, fun though they were.
A saxophone quartet joined the SCO for the final piece. Then, as an encore, this quartet gave us an excerpt from Bach's The Art of Fugue, in total contrast to what had gone before.
One of the pieces played, The Black Gondola, was actually by Liszt, arranged by Adams. There will be a version here for the next few days.
