Peatbog Faeries
Apr. 15th, 2007 09:16 pmScotland has fairies at the bottom of the garden and we saw them play at the Queen's Hall on Friday. The band is 1/3 rock rhythm section, 1/3 brass section and 1/3 folk lead instruments (whistles, fiddle, pipes). I've long been a fan of bagpipes mixed with rock instruments and the Peatbog Faeries do this very well. They are entirely instrumental with an emphasis on music for dancing (in the rock sense rather than the ceilidh sense).
The Queen's Hall is usually home to classical recitals or jazz gigs and this was the loudest band we'd ever seen there - not as loud as a mainstream rock gig but not the delicate tones of a lone grand piano either. As Mrs. Henry The Cow mentioned, it was probably also the loudest audience we've seen there too. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, including the members of the band.
The support act were Malinky, who were a more traditional folk band but rather good too.
As an example of the Peatbog Faeries, here is the track The Folk Police from their Faerie Stories album. This album was recorded before the brass section joined them, and the live version of this track was considerably longer and more complex, but this version is still good and gives you an idea of what they're all about.
