Cycling proficiency
Mar. 17th, 2009 10:32 pmI went along to M's school today to help out with the cycling proficiency training. This involved looking after a group of eight children while they practiced turning right from a side road onto a (comparatively) main road. I guess I did all right, because all eight of them got back to the school undamaged. (There were four instructors in all, plus the trainer, who actually knew what she was doing). Then we took out another class immediately after.
This was really enjoyable and felt very worthwhile; cCertainly worth taking a day's holiday for. The kids were excited but sensible enough not to muck about on the roads (they are 10-11 year olds, after all). Most of them were good at riding their bikes and just needed to learn how to mirror-signal-maneuver look behind, signal, check for traffic and turn. A couple need a bit more practice at riding with one hand on the handlebars, but they all could do much better at the end of the lesson than at the start.
I'll be helping out again next week. The kids will have more lessons after that, but I won't be able to take those days off work.
