Car bike carriers?

Dpes anyone have advice to offer about bike carriers?  I'm not really a car person.  I use the car club or hire cars when I need one, but I'd quite like the option of carrying our bikes out for a morning's ride somewhere.  I just looked at one web site which said the bike racks don't necessarily fit all makes of car and some of them require lighting boards and registration plates, which is all sounding a bit complicated.  I want something that I can just strap on a car in 5 minutes and take off again just as quickly, and then use on a different car the next time.

Of course, I'd need to check with the car club and the hire firm whether they allow me to use bike racks in the first place...
