At long last we've managed to find a joiner to fix the hall floor.  You'd think that with a recession looming, joiners would be looking for any work going, but there seems to be enough building work in Edinburgh to keep them busy at the moment.  Mrs. Henry-the-Cow has phoned several, of which two come round to give estimates (before the current chap) and neither of those returned our later calls.  Thankfully, the work was done yesterday (much to the distress of our two cats, who had to be looked in the study for their safety while much loud sawing and hammering went on.

The floor has needed doing for ages.  We had the flat rewired when we moved in and replumbed a couple of years later.  Those projects left us with several broken or split floorboards and many more that squeaked badly, so that every time we walked through the flat we triggered a sequence of unpleasant squeaks.  The grotty boards were hidden by a filthy old carpet that no longer fitted the new shape of the hall.  I hated it.  When I lifted the old carpet a few weeks ago, I could feel the years of grease sticking to my fingers.

Now the carpet is in the tip, the worst of the boards have been fixed and the whole lot is covered with plywood, ready for a new carpet.  Nothing too pricey, because the cats will probably trash it, but almost anything would be better than the previous one.
