Botheration!

As I walked past the building site around the new School of Informatics building, I tore the sleeve of my coat on a bit of fence.   As this is the coat I wear when visiting companies and other posh places, I'm going to have to buy a new one.  This is very irritating.   I'm not sure which annoys me most; having to spend the money or having to spend the time and effort to find a new coat that I like.

Probably the time is the more important, as it's time that I basically don't have.  Although admittedly, if I were going to spend money, I'd rather spend it on new electrical goods.  (I've been reading about HD TVs, although it seems a little early to buy one yet because there aren't enough HD TV signals (or HD DVDs) to display).

Are there no invisible menders here abouts?

Or is the damage beyond that?

(You can guess where my mind goes when I see a sign for invisible menders)

Or, get the informaticons to weave you a new coat from the very fabric of the universe. Or have I missed the point of what they do?

It is still a bit early for HDTV, although we're steadily making more use of ours. Probably an easy decision if you have an HD games console (Playstation 3) etc, as the games do look fabulous, as also do any videos or photos that we view using it (our PS3 is a gateway to all the photos, vids & mp3s that sit on our PC). We only have the Virgin HD content, which is pretty limited but it is nice to watch some of the BBC stuff in HD. It does even make normal TV look slightly better (our Virgin box upscales it to HD pretty well). We haven't really bothered with Blu-Ray just yet, though. Check it out en route to Gower in the summer if you like! - BrianD

The question perhaps needs to be - how bad is the tear?

A small tear says "look, I'm an on-site guy. I deal with people who actually do things." It's a badge of office.

A huge tear - yep, new coat.

HD - another way of spelling "don't bother". I have a huge HD ready projector: standard DVD images projected on a 9' x 6' canvas are stunning, with no dots visible unless you concentrate on a particular square foot of the image - which you do not when watching a movie.

BluRay - see also Betamax. It's a better format than HD DVD, as Betamax was better than VHS, but as before, doubtless Sony won't licence anyone else to produce BluRay discs. So it is doomed. Sony is a very stupid company when it comes to mass-market technology. I will certainly be avoiding Blu-Ray in case Sony do another Betamax. Sadly I will have to buy a PS3 in order to run GTA4 - will I?

No, get an X-Box 360, cheaper, better console (so I'm told) that you can also get that massacre zombies at the mall game for.
